FAQ

How long does remission last?
There can be no single answer to a question like this, because each person with RSD is an individual with unique characteristics and a unique share of the risks life brings. However, we need to recognise that, once one of use gains remission (as I have) there can be no guarantee that this will last a lifetime. Having responded to trauma one, by producing RSD symptoms, our body has shown that it is susceptible. Any further trauma (injuries, surgery etc) therefore carry a risk that the condition will return. Read Dianne Blackburn's story "Twenty-three years in remission…" for a valuable lesson in the risks involved and the care that is needed.
It does not, however, follow that every surgical intervention will bring on RSD symptoms. We know very little in absolute terms, but it seems that the greatest risks come when trauma affects an area of the body where many nerve roots come together. The best thing to do, if you are facing potential surgery, is to talk it over with the doctor/surgeon and make sure that your condition and risks are well understood.
I hope that my remission lasts for many more years and I hope that many more of you will enjoy prolonged periods without pain.
