Mefenamic Acid

Description
Mefenamic Acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that relieves pain and inflammation. It is an analgesic, used to treat headache, toothache, plus menstrual pains and/or bleeding. It is also administered to provide relief of long-term pain and stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Marketed under the proprietary brand, Ponstel.
Side effects

(Don't be unduly alarmed. All drugs cause side effects for some patients)

Indigestion, nausea and vomiting, gastrointestinal and abdominal pain. May increase sensitivity to sunlight. Mouth ulcers. Rapid weight gain due to fluid retention. More serious potential effects include kidney problems and blood disorders. muscle cramps, numbness, or tingling. Seizures.
Warnings

(These are standard cautions but may not be applicable to your case)

If exposed to the sun, use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing. For short-term use only - not to be taken for longer than 7 days. Take with food, milk, or an antacid to lessen stomach upset. Remain upright (sitting or standing) for up to half-an-hour after each dose to prevent throat irritation. Watch for bloody, black, or tarry stools, or vomited blood as such symptoms may indicate gastrointestinal damage. Alcohol taken while under treatment with this drug may increase the risk of stomach bleeding. Avoid using for patients who have aspirin allergy, stomach bleeding or ulcer, or liver or kidney disease. Not to be taken late in pregnancy because of potential risk to the baby's heart.
