Trileptal |

Description |
Trileptal is a proprietary form of the antiepileptic drug, oxcarbazepine. Oxcarbazepine is a white powder with an orange coloured tinge and is practically insoluble in water. The drug is available in tablet form (3 sizes). Trileptal is a medicine to treat partial seizures. |
Side effects(Don't be unduly alarmed. All drugs cause side effects for some patients) |
Allergic reactions, lost of concentration, dizziness drowsiness depression, headache, nausea, problems with physical coordination, speech problems, stomach pains, tiredness, tremor, vertigo, vomiting. |
Warnings(These are standard cautions but may not apply in your case) |
It is said that Trileptal may cause birth defects. Do not drink alcohol, which can increase the side effects of the medication. Trileptal can reduce levels of sodium in the blood, which may induce dangerous levels of nausea, extreme drowsiness and discomfort, headache or confusion. |

Remember - RSD/CRPS is rooted in the nervous system. The discovery that anti-epileptic drugs may have beneficial effects for RSD patients does not imply that they have epilepsy. I have been suffering from RSD for 3 years. I have tried several anti-epileptic drugs including Neurontin (moderately effective, minimum GI distress), Zonegran (SEVERE GI distress), Gabitril (moderately effective, drastic weight gain, moderate GI distress), and Topomax (very effective, BUT - severe weight loss, disabling mental & emotional effects). For the last 8 months I have been taking Trileptal, it is almost as effective as Topomax, and so far I have not experienced any adverse side effects. In conjunction with Bextra it has kept my RSD at a stable and acceptable level. Thomas - Downers Grove, Illinois, USA I have been on Trileptal for almost 1 month now. It seems to be working. So far I have not experienced any side affects. This is the first drug that I have been on that is working. I was on Pamilar and on Nortriptyline - both of these medicines were affecting my eyesight. I still enjoy studying maths. I was having a lot of trouble working
on number theory problems while on Trileptal, problems that I
once solved with ease. I felt stupid. A friend of mine suggested
tha the Trileptal my doctor prescribed for RSD was causing problems
with cognition. So, I decided to test myself. I purchased a puzzle
called "Traffic Jam". I had read that psychologists
were using this puzzle to test executive functioning in patients.
I divided the deck of cards in half. I successfully completed
all the puzzles, even the most difficult ones. Then, I took the
Trileptal, and tried to complete the puzzles in the other half
of the deck. I had difficulty solving the problems ment for pre-teens
to solve, let alone the more difficult problems. I discussed this
with my neurologist and I was withdrawn from this medication.
