Hello RSD Alert, I just wanted to inform you of the Vioxx recall. I am the webmaster of www.adrugrecall.com. We are following the story closely. I was wondering if you would like some news on the subject for publication on your site. The reason I want to do so is so that we can get the word out about the side effects of Vioxx and get the former patients help if they need it. Dean Dowd

I started taking Oxicontin, which didn't do anything for my pain, Viox and Celebrex only caused me more problems. Another correspondent (name withheld)

I have been taking Viox since Oct. 2000; this is an anti- inflammatory, which has not given me as much relief as they advertise. I only eat one meal a day and taking this med you have to eat or you get major stomach pain. I did. Some people may be different. The doctor increased the dose to 50 mg. but I didn't see any change so I asked to be changed to another drug named Celebrex. The doctor disagreed, saying that the if viox did not help Celebrex would not either. I have heard that many other RSD suffers find dramatic response to Celebrex. Amanda - USA

I have been taking Viox since about July 00. For me it has been great though I do get the side effect of being unable to sleep well at night if I take it too late in the day. My pain results from neck surgery. I still get stiffness in the neck area and shoulders, but have noticed that my hands and joints don't hurt as much since I have been taking Viox. I own and operate a Tire & Automotive shop, so I work with my hands and the job is pretty hard on my body. Ron - N.E. Iowa USA

My aunt, who is in a hospital in Nashville, has suffered kidney failure that the doctors suspect relates to Vioxx. They sent someone in to speak with her she is the first reported case of kidney damage. There have been, according to the hospital staff, kidney problems due to the drug, but she was the first reported case of actual damage. Beth - Illinois, USA

Vioxx is an anti-inflammatory and should be taken with a meal or it can cause stomach problems. Dianne - Canada

I've been taking Vioxx for months now with no major side effects - certainly less GI symptoms. I've been unable to take anti inflammatories in the past. Check out the news stories. There is talk of new side effects - loads and loads listed on the patient info leaflet - serious kidney problems are down as rare (less than 1 in 10,000 patients). I have been taking VIOXX 25mg daily for the past few months, I suffer from osteo-arthritis of both hips. I am still in pain but find I can move around that much easier when taking VIOXX, I have tried most other anti inflammatory drugs and find they all gave me stomach trouble which could not be tolerated. The side effects so far from Vioxx has been weight increase, blurred vision if I am very tired and upset sleep pattern but think this is worth it as I can get about more. I would be interested to see how this drug performs long term. Alan - UK

My fiancée was prescribed Vioxx after being diagnosed with RSD. A nasty little drug. He took it for about 10 days before he finally started losing his co-ordination and had a decrease in mental agility. There were other symptoms which we noticed… choking at night, breathlessness, sweating and extreme fatigue. Then he started to drop things, his speech became slurred and his thought processes slowed down. All these symptoms occurred slowly and almost unnoticed over a period of 14 days before we finally realised something was wrong. We checked on websites and read the instruction leaflet that came with the tablets and he stopped taking them. Gradually over 3 - 4 days the symptoms disappeared. Sharon - Glenrothes, Scotland

Hi, it's 2004 and Ii have been taking Vioxx for over 4 years for fractures in my back. Over those 4 years Ihave had stomach problems, gained weight, felt tired and depressed. I started going to the gym eariler this year to do light exercise. The gym instructer did some tests and was worried about my heart as it was beating very fast, even with light exercise which should have been easy. There's also a history of heart attacks and strokes in my family. In october I went to have an operation to fix my back. When I was admitted they told me about the Vioxx ban; I was shocked. Now after my operation I am very concerned. Vioxx did help me though the pain but what long term affects has it done? Leander - Nottingham, UK
