Soon
after Jenna started taking Diclofenec (about 18 months ago) in the
early days of her RSD she lost nearly all vision from one eye. Tests
indicated that there was no optical damage, so the cause for the
loss of vision was unknown. We assumed that the cause must be RSD,
because we have heard of other RSD patients suffering vision problems.
However, after discontinuing the Diclofenec for 3 or 4 days her
sight has returned in full. She also says that she is no longer
dizzy and has got rid of the sickness and headaches that she used
to get. We do not know for sure if it was the medication or the
RSD that caused the blindness, but we are encouraged to know that
this problem can go away just as quickly as it comes. Maybe it is
just a short term remission but, if it does return, we can fight
it again and succeed.
I know that every child is different, but I believe we have learned
something fundamentally important. The lesson is that determination
and will matter at least as much as treatments, and maybe more.
Child or adult, you achieve more when you are involved in your
own treatment and recovery than when you are having things done
to you.
POSTSCRIPT: Since this story was written, Jenna spent
many happy months pain free doing the normal things that little
girls her age do. However, in September 2002, she was in a collision
with one of her sisters and was knocked over. She sustained a
dislocated knee in her GOOD leg and as a result within 24 hrs
her RSD had returned to BOTH her legs. I am sorry to have to say
that she is once more wheelchair bound and in constant pain. She
is however the same girl who overcame this monster once, and I
am sure that given time, her Parents love and Jenna's continued
determination we will get her too her feet once more. Tony
