We don't have anything against doctors, but this story is a salutory lesson about the problems RSD patients experiece. RSD is not rare and can be treated effectively - but delayed diagnosis can seriously affect the outcome.

Doubts about doctors
(continued - page 3)

I went to the doctor. He told me that this was a normal result of Physio, gave me an injection and told me to go home and go to bed. When the injection wore off I went back to the doctor, as the pain was just as bad. He said I could not have another one of those injections as you can only have one a fortnight, so I was sent home. I lived like this for nearly 12 months (my husband was working away at this time).

Finally I got fed up big time! I went to the naturopath. I thought "nothing to lose!". I was assessed and given a program of Vitamins and Minerals. I was told it would take up to a month before I got any relief. One week later I was bouncing all over the place. I was totally amazed and completely converted. I was not totally pain free but the relief was unbelievable. Outside of the injections I had not had such pain relief for a long time.

On my next visit I was advised to trial Bowen Therapy. I was game after the previous result. I received my first treatment and I must say I was very skeptical. The next day I was amazed. The relief, I couldn't believe it this treatment worked! I went back. I have persisted with the Vitamins and Minerals. I don't have Bowen Therapy often as it is hard to access here but when I can I am first in line. I now am able to do Yoga and Tai Chi.

It has now been 4 years since I switched over to alternate therapy. I still have pain and I still get flairs. I have modified my diet and have removed as many chemicals as possible. I try to eat as many fruit and vegetables as possible. I do lapse and have junk food, but not often. I have found that I have trouble with soy products, MSG, margarine and low fat food (basically anything that is highly processed and most of the additives).

The weather affects the RSD, so does any bug I may pick up, I do occasionally work but cannot do so full time. About 12 - 15 hrs a week is my limit. I have to watch what I do physically and make sure I don't overload the old body. I take Vitamin B - Zinc & Magnesium, Glucosamine tablets everyday. I take garlic tablets during the summer months and Echinacea during the winter months. When I have a rise in pain I use Panamax. If it gets really bad I use Mersyndol Forte and occasionally Vioxx or Tramadol.

I am doing quite well.
And every day I miss my kids but every day I try to dwell on the things I am thankful for. Every day I thank my husband for standing with me through this hell. If he were not still with me I would not be here.

Ray's daughter gave birth to a little girl in November 2003. How pleased we are - but often I resent it. She is aware of my problems… Fancy having to temper the joy of your first child and new family with the thought that your stepmother sometimes has trouble with what is happening.

That is where we are to today. We have bought a block of land to bring me closer to available treatment and also to a milder climate. I hope that this story can be a help to someone.
Take Care and all the best for everyone in the future.
